God and her Daughter Papatūānuku

By Jessica Thompson Carr

Papatūānuku is a fierce bitch.
A wild, wise, forever moving like a
Game of statues kinda Witch.
She doesn’t give two rats if
You came “prepared”,
She’ll upchuck an avalanche
On your head soon as you pass.

She’ll open her legs and crush
Your skull with her knees like a
Milk carton. Then toss her lilies
and branches carelessly with
No remorse.

But she can be so kind and
Warm when she lets you bathe
In her tears and swim along
Her veins when she parts her
Lips and you see inside when

She lets you curl against her skin
When she lets a woman in.
