growing up without guns

By Krystal Lyons

I read an article this morning

about a four-year-old boy

who accidentally shot and killed his sister

how his mother struggled not to blame her son

how his grandmother struggled not to blame herself

and it was only then that I remembered

a family story, only talked about in whispers:

the same thing happened

to my grandfather when he was a child

a gun, an accident, a sister gone forever

I read an article this morning,

and now I know why I grew up in a house without guns
